Lakebread is a popular day trip from Ljubljana. There are several ways to arrive at the lake, including public transport and self-driving from Ljubljana to Lake Bled. Depending on your travel plans in Slovenia, these are your choices.

Ljubljana from the lake bleeding on the train

The lake has two train stations. Lesse and Jezerobread stations. Neither is very central, but if you don’t mind replacing the replacement a little, the system works easily.

If you arrive at Lesse Station, you will need to switch to the bus for an additional 4.5 km to arrive at the lake.

Once you arrive at Lesse Station, you will be about 3 km from the town of Bled on the west side of the lake.

From the bleeding lake to the lake in the car

Driving from Ljubljana to Bled Lake is very easy and often signed. The trip takes about 45 minutes without traffic. Kranj and Skofja Loka are beautiful towns to stop by if you want to see more of Slovenia, both on your way to the lake.

The best things to do in the lake

The activities offered at the lake are abundant, but the timing of your visit plays a major role in determining what you can do with the bleeding of the lake.

The best way to start your time at the lake is of course Walking around the lake. It takes 1-2 hours to walk through the entire lake within the circuit. Because trust me, this is one photogenic place.

View from Mala Osojnica

If you want to see the lake view from above, the best view is from Little Ojinika. The hike takes about an hour to complete and you can enjoy the views of the top.

Another great way to experience the lake is to be on the lake by boat, pretona, paddleboarding or kayak. In the summer months, there is no end to the amount of activity offered!

Swimming in the lake feels almost essential for a warm month. I’m happy to be able to report that the lake is beautiful and warm, at an impressive 30 degrees Celsius when the lake bleeds!

The best time to visit lake bleeding

I First lake bleeding In 2015, the weather returned to autumn when the weather was much colder. I’m back in the summer this year and it’s safe to say it was a very different experience. The lake is always beautiful to visit, but there are times when it comes to tidying up the specific way to experience it, there are better times to visit than others.

summer (June, July, August) The bread is hot, sunny and beautiful. This is the perfect time to experience all the lakes that every lake has to offer. The lake is beautiful and warm, making it a great time to swim in the lake.

spring (March, April, May) is definitely the best time to visit. Some people prefer to visit this season due to the low crowds, but this time it’s still popular.

winter and autumn It’s much colder (September-February) but it’s still a beautiful time to see the lake. Fall is beautiful as the leaves change colour. However, it is important to note that many restaurants, cafes and activities are closed during the cold months.

Recommended hotels, restaurants and tours in Lakebread

There are hotels, restaurants and tours on the lake, but it can often be a bit overwhelming. As someone who has visited both in the off-season and busy seasons, these are my top recommendations for lakes.

The villa bleed This hotel is in the best location on the lake. Overlooking Bread Island, you can access the lake directly via the stairs in front of the villa. However, it’s about 250 euros per night, which is one of the more expensive options in Lakebread.

Cafe Belvedere A cafe overlooking the incredible (in my opinion the best) view of the lake. You should try the bread cream cake here! It’s about dying.

Breadcastle Restaurant In fact, it’s a truly amazing option that’s bleeding and gives you spectacular views of the lake. Surprisingly, this menu is reasonably priced and offers a great introduction to Slovenian cuisine.

Public and Vegan Kitchen Bleeding It’s the perfect place for vegetarians and vegan foods that are bleeding. It was a surprise to me to find such a great vegan food here at Bread! The vegan burgers are huge and really tasty.

PR1MO Tour This is the perfect tour company for outdoor adventure sports. They rent mountain bikes, e-bikes, organize activities such as kayaking in the black hole, and take tours to Trigraf National Park. If you have your own car, I recommend taking yourself to a Triglav location, but if you rely on public transport or travel, taking a tour of the day is always a fun idea.

Things to do near the lake

If you’ve been in the lake for more than two days, you’re eventually tired of lake activity and are about to venture elsewhere (and shouldn’t!) for the area across the lake, some of the best highlights.

Vint Gargoe It can be reached in just 10 minutes by car. The canyon has 1.6km of water and a promenade, and you’ll pass through the canyon. A beautiful place to visit and costs 10 euros.

Trigraf National Park If you feel something a little more adventurous, it’s full of great day hikes. You can hike, hike, or take a tour yourself, such as those offered on the PR1MO Tour (above).

Lake Bohingi It’s a great alternative to lake bleeding and a much quieter experience. Here you can enjoy the activities of the same lake a little away from the beaten path.
