The 2025 Michelin Guide California ceremony was filled with celebrations as the choices were revealed. The 2025 selection has raised the bar at two new three-star restaurants.

Providence in Hollywood will be promoted from two stars, while West Hollywood’s Somni will be in the selection with three stars.

New 2-star and 1-star addition

The excitement continued with Sonoma’s Enkoros entering the selection on two stars, and San Francisco’s kiln being promoted from one star to two stars. The 2025 selection welcomed five new One Star restaurants that bring the state’s total to 65. Additionally, Encolo and his son and daughter in San Francisco were awarded two new Michelin green stars for sustainable gastronomy efforts. The complete selection, including bib gourmet food and recommended restaurants, is a total of 548 eateries, spanning 55 cooking types.

“Tonight was a big night for California and its culinary community,” said Gwendarpurneek, international director of the Michelin Guide. “Our anonymous inspector has discovered extraordinary culinary gems to highlight this year’s selection, including three star restaurants of the year, Providence and Somni. Congratulations to all the chefs and restaurant teams awarded tonight.

The distinction between the three Michelin stars went to Providence (Hollywood, seafood). There, chef Michael Simarsti’s California cuisine continues to be supported by purity and precision.

The tasting menu combines classic techniques with modern sensibilities, global inspiration and fresh, most sustainable seafood, often smashed into the wild from the American seas. Signature dishes include lobster mousse and box crab tart set in lobster mousse and crab beer blanc, cauliflower and shaved black truffles, soft poached eggs with uni and breadcrumbs, and salted Santa Barbara spot shrimp.

Chef Aitor Zabala (West Hollywood; Contemporary Cuisine) has returned with an improved iteration as a distinctly personal and unique dining experience. With its soothing, creamy palette and light wood decor, Somni presents Spanish-stained dishes with small bites such as the Isle of Escabeche, Gaspacho and the iconic Siso Tartar Tempura. The kitchen and service team operates perfectly harmoniously to serve each dish, meticulously arranged.

Two Michelin stars

Two Michelin stars were awarded to Encolos (Sonoma, Modern Cuisine) and housed at the 1880 Victorian Stone Edge Farm Winery Property.

Chef Brian Limoges’ menu features a charming lobster tartare with crisp shells, chowder evoking crumb chawanmuches, and sorrel ice cream desserts decorated with edible leaves seasoned with McCrute lime and pomegranate.

Killn (San Francisco, contemporary cuisine), led by chef John Wesley and general manager Juliana Yang, won promotions for tasting menus that highlight Scandinavian preservation techniques such as curing and fermenting.

Signature dishes include scorched bee tendons and squab breasts covered in burnt honey and truffle juice.

New Michelin Star recipients include Lilo (Carlsbad, Californian cuisine). Chef Eric Bost’s menu includes Geoduck and bone marrow dry-aged Japanese parent-child medals, and gourmet mushroom beef rib eye.

Morinozomi (Los Angeles, Sushi/Japanese cuisine) features an eight-seat sushi counter with fish from Japan and seasonal local produce.

Restaurant Ki (Los Angeles, Korean contemporary cuisine) by chef Kim offers a modern Korean tasting menu featuring dishes such as shirako jimpop, barbecue roast squab and mushroom ice cream sandwiches.

Silvers Omakase (Santa Barbara; Sushi/Japanese Cuisine) serves daily changing dishes made with both homemade Japanese rice and local fish.

Sun Moon Studio (Oakland, California cuisine) offers a mercury seasonal tasting menu that celebrates Californian ingredients with dishes such as Yuzu Kosho Butter and Dungeness Crab served with Taiwanese sausage brioche bread.

Michelin Green Star: Focus Sustainability

The Michelin Green Star was awarded to ENCLOS for locally produced organic produce, regenerative garden practices, carbon-negative and energy-independent operations, and for sustainable use of materials like fallen trees to provide trays.

San Francisco sons and daughters have been recognized for their in-house dairy program, which sources ingredients through environmentally friendly farmers and produces butter, cream freachets and yogurt for collaboration with local potters and craftsmen.

BIB Gourmand: Value Meets Quality

This year, 123 restaurants received a bib gourmand distinction that is highly valued with great food.

New entries include Atelier Manna in Encinitas, Eilan in Menlo Park and Komal in Los Angeles
