Travel expenses in Europe: Which countries are there and how much?

Planning a trip to Europe? Congratulations! If you’re reading this, you’re not used to traveling, or at least your first time on the continent of Europe. Well, don’t be afraid, I’m covered by you! I have been traveling solo Europe for the past 8 years. My first experience was difficult and overwhelming, but since then I have visited at least once a year, sometimes up to five times a year. So, if you’re wondering about travel expenses in Europe, get your notepad ready! It has all the information below: We support travel planning and budgeting.

Travel expenses in Europe by country

So you are planning a trip to Europe – an exciting time! Europe is my most favourite area for me to explore.

However, if you don’t know where to go for your budget, you will soon find that Europe is expensive. Below we break down the average daily costs of visiting each of the popular tourist countries and how to save money along the way.

For reference, the prices below are average costs per person, per day. This budget is generalised, but you can easily budget for it to be easier to use or splurge and spend more. Simply put, they are somewhere in the middle! European travel expenses prices are accurate at the time of publication in 2020.

The most expensive country in Europe

France

Daily Cost: 182.19 Euro

The most expensive country in Europe is sent to France every day. This probably won’t be a surprise to you. After many trips to Paris, I know I’m not shocked!

However, the high costs of visiting France are slightly increasing because of Paris. Most travelers visit Paris for a packed tour of several days, and from there they release hot tails to other European cities.

Budget Tips:

If you want to save money in France, venture beyond Paris. Food is very affordable across the country if you know where to go (hint: Latin Quarter).

Stay in Airbnb Instead of a hotel. They are more affordable and you will have a more local experience.

Switzerland

Daily Cost: 181.55 Euro

In another country, I’m sure no one is surprised to see this list in Switzerland. Honestly, just looking at expensive things makes them feel expensive! Breathing beautiful mountain air is expensive!

Budget Tips:

It will shorten your stay. Whichever you look at, Switzerland is expensive in every way you can imagine it. If you have friends or family you can stay with, this will reduce the majority of the cost.

Denmark

Daily Cost: 161.46 Euro

I visited Denmark in my early 20s and it was so expensive that I gave up on a price conversion and decided I couldn’t buy anything. If I remember correctly, I had supermarket sandwiches for dinner and washed them off with zero coke. Very chic!

Budget Tips:

Stay outside Copenhagen. It is famous for being one of the most expensive cities in Europe. I personally can guarantee it!

Iceland

Daily Cost: 133.63 Euro

Before visiting Iceland I knew it would be an expensive trip. The flight itself was stolen (from Barcelona to New York via Reykjavik) and offered a cheap stopover on the way to New York.

Iceland is expensive in terms of hotels, food, gasoline and admission fees. Even if you visit the waterfall you will still have to pay an admission fee!

Budget Tips:

A road trip between a destination and a trip with a friend splits the cost. Affordable hotels are available nationwide, especially if there is more demand in Reykjavik.

England

Daily Cost: 127.40 Euro

When you first visit Europe, there is a very good chance that London will be your agenda. And for good reason! This iconic city is the most visited city in the world every year. The main cost of visiting the UK is the accommodation. It doesn’t help that the pound always works favorably against most other global currencies.

Budget Tips:

Waitrose and Sainsbury are your friends. Grab a simple sandwich snack, eat on the go and skip expensive restaurants. If the London museum is free, it’s free, just like the parks, filling up the entertainment of the day by wandering around Soho. Other cities outside of London are much more affordable to visit.

Italy

Daily Cost: 124.14 Euro

This may be a bit surprising to you. Because how can it be expensive when using cheap pizza and house wine? ? The food is reasonably priced, but the prices for traveling in Italy will quickly increase. Cities such as Rome, Venice and Florence are the most expensive.

Budget Tips:

You’ll go outside the tourist city and stay in a small town. Instead of staying in Florence, try Lucca. Instead of staying in Venice, stay in Verona. You can take a day trip on the train anytime!

Netherlands

Daily Cost: 122.66 Euro

When you think Netherlandsyou think of Amsterdam. That’s normal! But I promise you are There’s more to the Netherlands Beyond Amsterdam. On top of that, other cities are much cheaper to visit! The average daily price spent in the Netherlands €122.66. But these few tips can easily save money.

Budget Tips:

Check in at Airbnb in Amsterdam or a local hostel if it’s your style. You can also save money by splitting costs with friends. Street food is readily available in major cities and is not only cheap but tasty!

Finland

Daily Cost: 120.73 Euro

Finland is an expensive country to visit whether you are in the capital or not, Helsinkior even further away in a small town.

Budget Tips:

Try staying with local families for a local experience. I was with my family in the Lakes area and not only was it affordable, it also gave me some insight into the local culture.

Sweden

Daily Cost: €112.67

Stockholm is the most expensive city to visit in Sweden. But don’t let it stop you! There are some great free attractions and public transport is easy to use.

Budget Tips:

Use public transport, use restaurants to enjoy cheap meals and supermarket lunches. If the accommodation offers breakfast, make this your biggest meal of the day.

Somewhere in the middle

Spain

Daily Cost: €111.96

Spain is quite expensive to visit, but as soon as you leave the big city ( Barcelona And Madrid) it will be much more affordable.

Budget Tips:

Exchange big cities for small towns. Indulge in tapas and kick back with a jug of sangria!

Greece

Daily Cost: €110.33

Greece can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. There are some great ways to save money, especially if you’re not running out of time. Local ferries are a great option for island hopping and are much more affordable than flying the island.

Budget Tips:

Use local transport to save on travel expenses between the islands. It takes a little longer, but the important thing is not the destination, but the journey! If you are carefully considering travel expenses in Europe, you may have to sacrifice your time to save money.

Ireland

Daily Cost: 109.47 euro

Ireland is one of my favourite countries to explore in Europe. It is so naturally beautiful and sets the perfect road trip scene! As soon as you leave Dublin, the country becomes more affordable.

Budget Tips:

Road trips are a great way to see this country, but public transport is much more affordable on a budget.

Germany

Daily Cost: €106.78

Germany is located in the heart of Europe. In other words, it is very well connected to the trains. This will be a great adventure by the land and will also save you money. Big cities like Berlin, Cologne and Munich are far more expensive than countryside.

The cheapest country in Europe

Serbia

Daily Cost: 18.75 Euro

Serbia is the most affordable country for daily cost analysis. If you are carefully considering travel expenses in Europe, Serbia is a great option for budget travelers. Belgrade is an amazing city and has a lot to offer to visitors and I highly recommend it!

Ukraine

Daily Cost: €23.00

Ukraine is another great option for travelers considering travel costs in Europe. Local transport may seem daunting at first (as there are no English signs). But you’ll be surprised at how much you can speak with hand gestures and broken English!

Russia

Daily Cost: €38.92

Russia is one of the more affordable countries in Europe, but Moscow and St. Petersburg are still quite expensive. If you’re on a real adventure, head out to a small town and spend more time on the beaten path.

Albania

Daily Cost: €41.31

One of my friends recently went to Albania for her honeymoon. It’s not the usual first choice for a honeymoon, but she said it was a great adventure! Albania remains one of the least visited countries in Europe. This makes it very undervalued at a very affordable price.

Bulgaria

Daily Cost: €51.04

Still in Eastern Europe, Bulgaria is perfect for budget travelers. As you may have already noticed, the more east you venture, the more affordable it becomes.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Daily Cost: €54.85

Bosnia and Herzegovina are one of my number one travel memories. The country is very underrated and locals are very welcoming to foreigners. To save money on my trip, I was with a local Bosnian family in Bragazi. They were kind enough to cook breakfast every day and take me to Mostar every day!

Hungary

Daily Cost: €57.68

Budapest has become one of the most popular cities to explore in Europe. Hungary’s capital has many accommodations, so it’s affordable to stay for a while.

Poland

Daily Cost: €58.58

Finally, we conclude our list in Poland. Many travelers head south to Krakow, but the country is often overlooked by visitors. However, even this way, I highly recommend spending more time in Poland! Warsaw’s capital is one of my favourite capitals in Eastern Europe.
